Discover how AUB Online MA Interior Design students were inspired by a presentation from transitional and regenerative design expert Gary Wilburn.
AUB Online MA Interior Design students recently had the opportunity to watch a transitional and sustainable design presentation by Gary Wilburn, Project Lead at ep projects.
Gary has 35 years of experience leading architecture and multi-disciplined design teams from his base in Hampshire. His focus is to minimise impact and energy use in the construction and whole-life operation of all projects, whether a new build or refurbishment.
Recently, Gary’s projects have involved the redesign and regeneration of historic buildings, including old railway stations, providing insight into how designers connect the past to the present to create transient spaces.
Students on the MA Interior Design course were able to meet Gary and ask him questions during one of their weekly online seminars. This gave them insights into transitional and sustainable design related to their current ‘Transition’ module.
This module looks at the philosophical way of thinking when transitioning through space. Students then translate their reflections into a 3D artifact or installation, developed via experiments linked to philosophical debate.
When we asked Gary about his involvement with the MA course and the importance of students engaging with industry, he outlined:
“To engage with experienced design professionals and industry leaders wherever possible is essential for students to gain insight and discuss the day-to-day workings of what a designer really does in practice. Most people enjoy this engagement and will often offer up time willingly.”
Course Leader Sarah Bax added:
“We are very lucky to have such experienced and passionate professionals connected to the course, who are willing to meet and be involved with the students. This provides invaluable insights into the interior design profession and also opens up a wealth of networking opportunities.”
Gary has a very active involvement within the construction industry and is Chair of the AECB (Association for Environment Conscious Building), a Board member of Future South and sits on the steering group of The Green Halo. He regularly speaks and chairs at events and is keen to continue bringing his commercial contacts, experience, enthusiasm, and energy to whatever he engages with.
Students on AUB Online’s MA Interior Design course have exclusive access to presentations from industry professionals. This provides not only an insight into current industry practice, but a wealth of research sources and networking links.
