Aikaterini Gegisian

Aikaterini Gegisian is an artist filmmaker and researcher whose filmic and photographic collages, drawing on diverse image histories, interweave documentary, archive and found material, in examining the production of cultural and national identities.
After obtaining a PhD by practice (University of Westminster, 2014), focusing on the Essay Film, she conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania (US), Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen (Austria) and the Library of Congress (US). She has taught photography, film and new media across a number of UK universities and was a guest lecturer in a range of institutions in Greece, Austria, US and Japan.
She is currently an Associated Lecturer in Critical Contextual Studies at London Metropolitan University and an Associate Member of the Higher Education Academy.

Career highlights
- Having her short films exhibited internationally, including at ISFF Oberhausen, Videoformes, Kasseller Documentary Film Festival, Beirut Art Center, 8th Brighton Photo Biennale, The Whitworth, Tallin Photomonth among others.
- The first survey of Aikaterini’s moving image practice being organised by Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art in 2016.
- Receiving several awards including First Prize, Nagoya University of Arts, Japan and the Golden Lion for best national pavilion for her participation at the group show Armenity at the Armenian Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale.
- 2023 will see the premiere of Third Person (Plural), her first feature length film and eponymous book (published by MACK); a long-term archival project based on a collection of two hundred post-war informational films and newsreels sourced from the Library of Congress and the American National Archives.
