Karen Cunningham
MA Film Practice Course Leader
Karen is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with moving image. She has shown work nationally and internationally and her recent films have been commissioned by LUX moving image, Collective Gallery Edinburgh, and The Centre for Research Collections at Edinburgh University.
Karen has been actively engaged in the expanded field of moving image as a filmmaker, programmer, researcher, and tutor for over 20 years. She has also curated a number of screenings and events for various institutions including Tramway, Glasgow, and VBKÖ, Austria.

Career highlights
- Filming the American artist Robert Smithson’s earthwork ‘Broken Circle/Spiral Hill’ in Emmen whilst on artist residency in The Netherlands.
- Collaborating with the post-colonial theorist Gayatri Spivak on my film ‘Moveable Type; Under Erasure’.
- Being commissioned to make a film by LUX moving image.
