Karen Cunningham

MA Film Practice Course Leader

Karen is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with moving image. She has shown work nationally and internationally and her films have been commissioned by LUX moving image, Collective Gallery Edinburgh, and The Centre for Research Collections at Edinburgh University. 

Karen has been actively engaged in the expanded field of moving image as a filmmaker, programmer, researcher, and tutor for over 20 years. She has taught at several art schools, most recently as a lecturer on the Contemporary Cinema course at Edinburgh College of Art. Karen is currently working on a new film supported by Creative Scotland.

Career highlights

  • Filming the American artist Robert Smithson’s earthwork ‘Broken Circle/Spiral Hill’ in Emmen whilst on artist residency in The Netherlands.
  • Collaborating with the post-colonial theorist Gayatri Spivak on my film ‘Moveable Type; Under Erasure’.
  • Being commissioned to make a film by LUX moving image.
